OpenAI Faces Regulatory Scrutiny as It Expands ChatGPT Pricing and Developer Capabilities

OpenAI is facing increased regulatory attention while simultaneously expanding its commercial AI offerings, highlighting the dual pressures shaping the generative AI landscape. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced an investigation into the alleged role of ChatGPT in a 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University, following claims from victims’ attorneys that the tool was used in planning the attack. Uthmeier indicated that subpoenas are expected as part of the probe, as concerns grow around AI safety and its potential influence on harmful behavior.

OpenAI stated it would cooperate with the investigation and emphasised ongoing efforts to improve safety systems, noting that hundreds of millions of users rely on ChatGPT for everyday tasks. The investigation adds to broader scrutiny surrounding AI’s societal impact and safety risks.

Also this week, OpenAI has introduced a new $100 per month Pro tier, aimed at developers using its Codex coding tools. The company said the plan offers significantly higher usage limits compared to its $20 Plus tier, reflecting rapid growth in demand for AI-assisted coding, with millions of users now actively using Codex each week.
