India Leads ChatGPT Images 2.0 Adoption as Emerging Markets Drive AI Image Surge

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.0, launched last week with enhanced multilingual text rendering and refined image generation, has found its largest user base in India, where the platform was downloaded approximately five million times during launch week, compared to roughly two million in the United States.

Third-party data from Sensor Tower and Similarweb points to a mixed global response, with app downloads rising 11% week over week but daily active users and web traffic growing only modestly. Sharper spikes appeared in emerging markets including Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, with some seeing download increases of up to 79%.

In India, usage patterns skew toward personal creative expression — stylized portraits, fantasy visuals, photo restoration, and social media imagery. OpenAI faces intensifying competition in this space, with Google’s Nano Banana having previously recorded similarly strong early traction in the same market.
